Writing Fellowships

A limited number of rent stipends are available for new and mid-career writers. If you qualify, you will receive free rent, including utilities and wireless Internet access, for a minimum of three months. Fellowships are renewable for selected applicants.

Living quarters are on Gillespie Street, adjacent to the Union College Campus in Schenectady, New York. Amtrak, the bus terminal, libraries, restaurants, parks, and theaters are within a mile.

The qualified applicant will:

  • Have a work-in-progress.
  • Be committed to working full-time on a creative project.
  • Be open to living in shared quarters with other writers.
  • Be willing to actively participate in activities or projects that will contribute to the building or the community. (Approximately 5 hours per week)

Terms:

  • Fellowships are open to creative writers in all genres.
  • Joint applications from couples and partners are welcome; however, couples might be asked to share a room.
  • Applicants agree to work full-time on their creative projects and may not hold outside employment during the fellowship period.
  • Fellowships are for a minimum of three months. At the end of the second month, residents may apply for additional months.
  • Rent is fully covered, but residents must pay a refundable security deposit of $600. Deposits are returned at the end of the fellowship period provided that the applicant has stayed for the entire fellowship term (minimum of 3 months) and the living unit is left clean and undamaged.
  • Fellowship does not include food or incidental expenses.
  • Sorry, no smoking and no pets.

After an initial screening, selected applicants will be asked to send references and a short writing sample. Finalists will be screened via a brief telephone interview.
